Kathyo,

I totally agree with Yvette. I have been looking for a pup the last 4 -5 months. First thing I would suggest is, go out to your local SCH club and make sure that SCH is what you really want to do. It is a long and hard, time consuming process. The better the dog, the better the process. Look at the dogs that are at the club, find out where the ones that work really hard came from, write down the names of those dogs, find out who the breeder was. Nothing is worse than a dog that doesn't have the working drive. Second, I would not try to obtain a pup on your own, find a person that really knows working lines and german breeders and use them to broker the deal. The better the reputation this person has, the better chance you will have to get a really good pup vs just leftovers pups that are sent over to the US or the worst of the litters. Thrid, find the best breeding female you can, going with a great male and a mediocre female will produce just mediocre pups.

I have just secured a 6 week old pup from one of the top breeding working males and a terrific working female out of Germany. There was no way I would have been able to get this pup unless I had the help from a very well respected and well known SCH handlers/trainers here in the US. It took a while, but it was well worth the wait. Whatever you do, DO NOT GO IT ALONE. Breeders will spot you a mile away and will be more inclined to take advantage of you and your lack of knowlegde.  In the working world looks are icing on the cake. It's more about drive (toy/ball and food), nerves and temperment. Take it from someone just like you, just starting out in SCH, even with all that was mentioned above, it's still a roll of the dice, there are no sure things.  But following the steps above, your percetages are much higher of getting a really good pup. Just my 2 cents.

Good Luck,
pcw

Yes I have a fabulous dog from Mike Diehl also though I purchased him at 12 mo when he came into the country from the Czech Republic and not as a little puppy.  Polo z Danaru got his SchH3 at two years with 98-96-90 and is getting better and better.  He was started by Frans Slaman who sends many, many nice dogs to this country. I could not be more happy with this boy of mine,  Barb
