It's like anything else. If you undersatand the terms, you know what is being explained. Two people are sitting in a room. The one turns to the other and says, "all you care about is yourself. You don't care about me. You put youself in front of us all the time. Your needs always come first. You think that you are better than everyone else." Now, wouldn't be easier to just turn to the person and say, "you are a self-centered, arrogant prick!"?

..ok so lets see if after reading all this .....it means that civil drive is same as personal protection w/o personal protection training...a natural protection drive...right?

LADY that is close but almost any dog will protect its owners in a bad situation by barking and snarling

a civil dog will go past the barking and actually bite

a dog i think must be civil for persoanl protection training

personal protection training teaches a civil dog how to properly protect i think

think kung fu fighter is a PPD

you and me just plain civil lol we will bite/fight if we have to but we are not trained in it but we will do it to protect our loved 1s

poison...makes sense...so the point of original post is...

How common is a dog who will protect you without proper training of protection and not run away from  a stranger with its tail between its legs?

LOL..i guess it took 3 pages to get the question straight...LOL

I think its harder to find a dog who would not bite a stranger/intruder/attacker....I know for a fact that without training my dog will bite if I act unsure.... my dog will get between me and a person who is making me uncomfortable and will bite if I even as much as flinch or feel cold chill of being scared...
we had many post here and stories when dogs bite in order to protect...

Ladyfrost, if that is what you want to believe about this simple term. Go search for the Civil thread from last month. If I can find it I will bump it. I posted a nice amusing video that was produced by Ivan that explains civil around the 8 minute mark.

I hate how people take a simple post simple question and turn it into this huge insane complex debate

this is not rocket science i just wish experienced people would just spill it out instead of fighting with themselves for us NEWBS

lady a lot of gsds and dogs will get inbetween u and the attacker but a lot of them wont go further then that

but i have seen with my own eyes a lab bite someone to protect a kid so im not sure

poison..i think its how far they are pushed...if they snarl and bark and person backs off...there is no reason to bite...point is made, job accomplished, intruder retreated....there are NOT a lot of people who would continue to push a dog to the point of a bite....so in reality there is no accurate way to measure this...i guess its lies, lies and statistics....LOL

I think the mistake some people make is assuming the "bad guy" is always going to confront them in an obvious manner. It's great if a dog will snarl, bark and look scary, but what happens if your attacked from behind or by surprise? At that point the dog bites and tries to help or stands there barking at the bad man hurting you.
