If you do OFA's on a dog and then get their AKC number after you submit them, can you call OFA and get them to add the number onto the dog? Or should you wait to register the dog before doing their OFA hip and elbows?

When you register the dog with AKC then do OFA testing it is put on the OFA site. AKC will add this to the dogs
papers and if you get a 3-4 generation pedigree on this dog many times OFA information is on other dogs that were OFA tested..

I am waiting before I do any testing that can be sent to OFA because it seems like it will be a pain to add the AKC number afterwards.
My puppy is almost 5 months and I still don't have her AKC registration papers. There are some tests I could do now, I don't have to wait until she is 2 like for hips. Seems like a hastle to try and add the AKC number after the testing panels (blood work, xrays, ect) have been sent into OFA.

(It sucks because I STILL don't even know the dam's pedigree, the kennel I bought her from was unwilling to give me this information after I had asked more than once. I even tried the kennel in europe that her dam came from, and got no response from that breeder either, but maybe they didnt know english so can't blame them there. I won't trust to buy a GSD puppy from a breeder in USA again after this experience. I will get another breed if I get another puppy)

As long as the dog is chipped, you can link them later.

Most people I know did prelim xrays @ 6 mo. or so to determine whether to put more time/money/effort in the dog.

of course all that is mute if there is no paperwork on the dog.

good luck with your next breed.

you will have to have some kind of paperwork recognized by the AKC. you could not just xray a dog, then tell the AKC that it was XYZ dog. you should really contact OFA/AKC if your dog has a foriegn registry that is recoginized. If it has no paperwork, then I doubt it would be recognized by AKC.
