My GSD is 13 months. I am interested in getting him into some competitions. I know he will need to have proof of good hips/elbows etc. At what age do I do this for him? Thank you!

My understanding the the Orphapedica Foundation of America (OFA) cannot issue a certificate until the dog reaches 2 years of age. This doesn't prevent you from having your veterinarian do a hip scan even at this age. The scan cannot be certified-- but it should give you some idea of the future outcome.

You can have preliminary xrays done and receive a preliminary rating via OFA if the dog is under 2. Once 2, they can be officially certified. SV can certify at 12mos.
